Hi! I am going to get a green tree frog, and I was wondering of I needed a heat lamp, or a under tank heater. I thought maybe I could use a Zoo Med Repti Heat Cable instead. Would that work?
Thanks!
It will all depend on what and when you need to heat. Nominal room temperature will dictate what the tank temps are and then you would have to base heating off of that. If your tank/room is 68 degrees with no heat source in the tank at night, then a basic heat mat placed on the side will provide a good heat for creating a warmer area and a cooler on the other.
If your room is always around 68 degrees, then the addition on the side heat mat, and then a CFL bulb above is all that is needed to create some added heat, and the day and night lighting cycle needed.I run two compact florescents daytime and no heat source at night for my red Eyed Tree Frogs.
I would post a pic of the tank and some info on tank night and day temps so someone may suggest alternatives. Also keep in mind that a daytime lamp or heat lamp will reduce humidity so you may have to adjust amount of misting and possibly covering part of tank top with glass or plastic.

I was wondering about heat as well. If I place a heat mat on the side glass will the glass get too hot for the frogs? Does it have to have plants or something in front of it? Thanks!

2 white's tree frogs
I have 2 white's, housed in an 18x18x24 enclosure.
I use a zoomed large UTH mounted to the side of my tank. My frogs sleep on the glass where it is all the time. Initially I became very worried they would get burned, but upon further research, I discovered the pad itself doesn't heat higher than 78 degrees, which is probably quite comfortable for them. I also think that frogs are pretty savvy and wouldn't sleep somewhere that felt too hot. I worry more about the heat lamps overhead that seem very hot. What if the frogs were climbing and got too close? I've burned myself accidentally with those many times before.
Just thought I'd voice my own experience...
I suppose there is still risk, what if the pad were to short circuit?
the frogs wont get burnt. wen i first got my heat mat i had to get my friend (owns a pet shop) to check it was workin as i thought it would get alot hotter than it did. it only gets slightly warm to the touch but creates enough heat to bump the temp up just that bit extra.
I have used a laser thermometer to check the temp on the side mounted UTH and it only gets to the mid to high 70s. The have an internal themostat built in so they shouldn't over heat unless it is faulty.
don't mess with my frogs
