    Default Dead crickets

So 72 crickets died on the way home. Any place I can get crickets is two hours away. A family member picked them up & its my fault cause i should have had them pick up some critter keepers. Anyways.. can I still feed them to my green tree frogs? They are doing great by the way after I saved them from a pet store that housed them with hermit crabs, all sorts of lizards, ect. I will dust them and everything before if i can still feed them to my frogs. Btw.. I'm new here! Been just following for awhile. thank you.

They should be alright to feed. It depends on how the crickets died though. If they died from dehydration, then it will be fine to feed. If they died from starvation, then they will be of little nutritional value, but still alright. If they died of some sort of contaminant, then not at all alright to feed. Hope this helps! Also, it's always great to hear when someone saves the animals! Have you considered reporting the pet store for animal cruelty etc...?

It's so funny cause they aren't dead! I guess they just got too cold & looked like they died but when I got them I warmed em up. Every single one is alive! & that pet store has had many complaints. I don't know how they aren't shut down. They are horrible with their reptiles!

Great! Crickets do tend to become motionless in the cold. Has anyone formally reported them to an animal protection agency?

I'm not sure. All of their snakes all have multiple eye caps from different sheds and most the shed still on. They are skinny and horrible looking. They have some kind of saltwater large grouper in a like 15 gallon display tank. If he wasn't 100 dollars and I had saltwater tanks still I would get him. its depressing.

I hate stores like that. Even worse is that they prey on the people who care enough to remove the animals from terrible conditions.

    Hi All,

A friend shared this with me after I rescued a 1/2 dead Red Eyed Tree frog.
( scratched ,cut, a gross eye and was in quarantine for 6 months- lives with a healed scared face . 'Monkey' is happy and healthy now w/ enclosure mates.)
The day I bought 'Monkey'; I did not ask for a discount. I put him in the car, locked the doors, and went back into the store to have a little talk.
I asked why this frog in such terrible condition?
The response was " They're cheap for us to buy , It's just to time consuming for us to baby them back to health. "

I informed the store I was going to file a complaint but did not have to.
The store ended up being closed down for several violations. Ha Ha

It's probably well worth doing something formally. All of us have seen enough! If there were better standards developed for stores etc. less of this would happen.
It's always best to speak out! Every little bit helps. I'm sure you could even do this anomalously if your nervous about it. If this store got enough complaints - something would happen!

In fact, I have plans to check on a little frog today.
However ,this store knows I have Red Eyes (he saw me looking at the frog and enclosure)
and actually asked my advice on the enclosure this frog was in- which was terrible. (dry-fine pine bedding for substrate)
WE fixed the frog's enclosure together! At least he cared. But I'm not sure they have done the right thing since?

Have you thought about buying crickets: Josh's Frogs - Largest online herps feeders and reptile supplies store
They are very easy to keep and cheap to feed. I could give you a recipe for cricket food.
Or buy food. This lasts for ever! I mix it w/ my homemade cricket food.

I just buy from local. I love the prices of the Josh's crickets but $20 dollar shipping I can't exactly do. Nothing against him or anything. Plus my friends breeds them along with mealworms ball pythons geckos reticulated ect. Lol he has a zoo in his house. & thank you for the info on reporting the pet store.
