I don't have one. My frog seems pretty healthy, eating regularly and whatnot. It does back itself into a corner and stay there almost all the time though. Maybe this is because it doesn't feel secure. So anyway, how important is a background?
Well, most frogs feel more secure with 3 sides of their tank covered. You can use whatever you'd like as such. I find it easiest to use the aquarium backgrounds that are like window clings.

Depending on what material is used, It's insulating as well, making it easier to maintain a high temperature.
All of the above. A lot of frogs get stressed due to feeling out in the open when not having a background on their home. Some will not eat due to this stress and others like yours will eat. It is still important regardless. Even with a background on your frog though he may still spend a lot of time in that corner. From there the frog can see its entire home. This may also give the frog a sence of security.
