What I ended up doing to Robin's Exoterra was I sealed up the gaps with silicone, then took a razor and sliced on one side of the seam, thus creating a seal that allows the doors to be opened while keeping the fruit flies in. The fun part will be sealing up the vents with mesh without getting the silicone in it.
