Default How to prepare wood used in new vivarium?

    Hi all,

We're setting up a tree frog vivarium. I have several nice pieces of wood to use.

What are the generally used treatments to prevent wood from introducing pests or disease in the viv? (boiling, baking, chlorine?)

    Thanks in advance
    Mark

Watching FrogTV because it is better when someone else has to maintain the enclosure!

I have always read that baking is the best. about 10-15 mins on 350F should do if I am not mistaken

I have found out over the years that a regimen of boiling, followed by baking is best (as described in the article). This not only kills off all the nasty stuff living in the wood, it helps to reduce tannins that can discolor your enclosure and upset the pH.

This is of topic, but to create false logs, couldn't you just cover PVC/ABS pipe in GE II Silicone, and then roll the pipe in eco-earth?
