DEFINITELY don't place a hot light directly on cling wrap. I've never tried that, but it doesn't sound like it would end well. Both of my frog's lights are snake-like desk lamp sort of things, so I can turn them just a little bit to get a less direct exposure, or aim them at the base of one half of the cage.

If you use plastic wrap, never put it directly under the light. The wrap should cover about 2/3 of the top leaving the rest open for ventilation. You should also poke a few holes for more air flow. The light goes over the section not covered by the plastic wrap.

Very good point. That can be the difference between bumping up your temps/humidity and putting your frog in a microwave!

If Jr could climb, He'd be right up by the lamp. He's looking better, but has only eaten 2 smallish crickets. I have a lamp that has a snake neck. It clamps onto the shelf and I can twist it in the direction I want it to go.
thanks for the help guys, i'll keep you posted if anything changes. I just hope he doesn't scare me like that again. I already have one sick animal, I don't need another one.

Some thoughts :]

1. Infra-red can't cause any kind of problems in their behavior, and/or eye's. I've been looking for information on it and can't find anything. I've always been under the idea that infra-red bulb's can be on as a 24 hour heat source. If you got anything saying otherwise please send my way, I just never found anything.

2. Saran wrap, and foil are good quick fixes but try plexi. It seems you guys are worried about it catching fire so why mess with it? Plexi is cheap, and is an end-all for humidity issues. Back in the day my pops used to hate when I used saran wrap because he thought I would burn the house down too lol. He made me use plexi, and honestly it's so much better. It looks nicer, and doesn't pose any kind of hazard. It's also cool because it's perfectly see through, and you don't loose any kind of sight from the top of the tank. If you use it to cover up 2/3's and then cut a hole in the center of that piece it works beautifully.

3. Forgot to mention to use a probe WHENEVER using any kind of heat lamp. I usually just leave the probe in the tank before I put any animal in a tank with a lamp. Accurite has a really cheap thermometer/hygrometer. It will record Ambient temps, humidity, and probe temps. It costs 12 bucks at walmart. I have like 10 of them for my snakes lol. But you put the probe on the substrate directly below the lamp, and see what it gets to. I can link you guys if you want.

I have plexi on my Pacific's tank. It keeps her tank humid and keeps the heat in like a charm. I don't have any big enough pieces to use on Jr's tank though. The tinfoil works pretty good. the only problem I have with the plexi is that when the temp in the tank rises it bends and the corners come up, so I get worried the my tiny Pacific will crawl out. She has a light on the side of her tank which she basks in. I wanted a piece of glass for Jr's tank, it worked great on my fishtank to keep heat and humidity in. Only half would be covered, the rest of the tank would have the hood on it. thanks for everyone's help.

That's the one. I wouldn't worry about them crapping out on you. Tried and tested among the bp.net community for years. I've had mine for over 5 years, and they work like a charm still.

The higher wattages even infrared can cause burns. The lack of bright light doesn't remove the oven affect that comes from them. This is why they dry everything out so bad. Has nothing to do with affecting their day night cycle. The wattage can be dangerous if not monitored. The temps may read correctly but it is still possible to harm the frog from direct exsposure to the higher strength bulb. If mmonitored and not placed directly over the enclosure it may work fine, but risks will be taken and two heat pads with a lower wattage light will provide the same affect with out the danger or actually cooking the frog and drying him and everything out. Plus the extra heat pad as I mentioned before will warm the glass which is where the ambient air in the house cools the enclosure. The air outside does like the defroster of a car heater. When its warm the glass inside the care will be cold yet outside the cars winshield will be warm. Heat trancfer is how it loses temp inside. The heat pads will help stop that.
