Thanks for the comment i agree 100% your only supporting bad care for the animal. Why would they change the way they are doing things when people buy them anyway as they keep them? Pet stores care about the money not the animal. It is sad and hard to walk away but i would rather one animal suffer than hundreds more. I feel the same about wild caught animals vs. captive bred. Wild caught may be cheaper but if there are thousands being captive bred than there is no need to add to the problem of collecting wild animals for the pet trade just to save a few dollars. If your that concerned about cash maybe you shouldnt get one to begin with.

True which you have done by voicing your opinion. I do not disagree that it is supporting a store that promotes animal cruelty. Sadly its unwittingly. Half the staff at these stores wouldn't know a horned lizard from a horned frog. If just one person makes a difference in one of those chain stores then maybe it will spread to the rest of the chain. No way to know for sure, but a good thing was done no matter if it supported that store. We can alwys hope they'll change, but there is never a guarentee.

Sadly, in a lot of petstores, the next ten to take the place of the one you buy are already back in the stock-room waiting until the display-floor animal dies or finds a home, already in the same conditions. It's even worse for the rodents and small mammals, since they're often housed in some really over-crowded situations 'backstage' that they simply couldn't do with a lot of the reptiles/amphibians like pacman frogs because of cannibalism. The ones in back don't even get the pathetic attempts at treatment that the ones up front do if they fall ill. Pretty gross stuff.

I 'saved' my pacman and my two goldfish from the same store, so I can't really say anything about not supporting the chains stores Honestly, I think that even if all the people who were really concerned about giving their animals proper care were to boycott buying animals from those stores (because let's face it, they're usually the only way to get supplies without having them shipped, which can get pretty pricey! I'd still have to shell out money to them for the basics even if I never looked at their animals again) the number of idiots who really don't care would probably still keep them going. Gah, the whole system is so frustrating!

Petsmart or atleast the ones I go to only order one Pacman at a time. If they have 2 they will put one in the display case and the other in that display case with the other but in a critter keeper. So atleast there aren't 10 more waiting in back at those chain stores.

I know you probably dont get replies on this post but I just saved one from Petsmart a couple days ago! They had him in a critter keeper too. The same exact way. I'm proud of myself for saving him(:

It can be argued farely on both sides a good deed was done and yet the chain profits as a whole even if that store changes its care for the animals the others that didn't still profit and continue their misinformed cruelty. Grif I think we can agree on a lot of things. I don't have a problem with large chains, where would this hobby be without our pet stores? I also agree that animal cruelty is and always will be. The OP, and you, saw a frog that was being mistreated, purchased it, and may have even prevented it from dying. I have no doubt that you are both compassionate people. Furthermore, who's to say that a reputable breeder doesn't mistreat their animals? I apologize for coming off harsh. Just don't be disappointed when you find it's replacement living in the same conditions. I have a different opinion on the meaning of saving and rescuing an animal, I see this as adopting or purchasing an unwanted pet, not buying it from a pet store.

To the OP: forgive me, and nice frog :-)

Ofcourse you're forgiven and yes this hobby would definetly have problems if there weren't any chain stores like Petsmart/Petco and etc. I completely understand your opinion on saving a frog and 10 more taking its place. I know first hand because after I recued Loki a week later there was another in the same boat. This is when I said that's it and chewed the manager a new one. He was pretty surprised by my ferm tone as I did this and showed him the mistake as well as what the frog should have. I would say if the breeder treats them badly then they wouldn't be breeding for long as their losses would be far greater than their sales. As for the rescueing being just like adopting, it is exactly like that as when you adopt an animal there are exceedingly more than 10 that take its place.

Glad to have this discussion end this way.
