Thread: Gray vs Green?

    Default Gray vs Green?

So after some reading, research, and consideration, I've narrowed my species choices down to either H. versicolor/chrysoscelis or H. cinerea. I was wondering if anyone here had any preferences between Hyla versicolor/chrysoscelis and H. cinerea?

They seem to be relatively similar in size and housing requirements, but if one species is hardier/more fit for a beginner over the other, I'd really like to know.

Also, I've seen H. cinerea at several local petshops; however, as they are most likely wc, I'd prefer to find cinerea/versicolor/chrysoscelis from a different source. Any suggestions for online breeders?

Thank you in advance for any opinions/input

In the US you'll find it very hard to find CB American treefrogs. I had CB Gray TF froglets available a few months ago but there was almost zero interest and now I have none. I plan to breed my adults again late next spring so that's a possibility.

Regarding hardiness, definitely the Gray Tree Frog. Greens are a more humid and warm region frog - look at the distribution maps on amphibiaweb. Greens are also kind of skinny and wimpy looking in my opinion. The other option, and these are available from Salty City right now (Leonard had WC adults lay eggs while he was trying to sell the adults) is the Barking Tree Frog - Hyla gratiosa. Think of it as a much chunkier version of a Green. They feed very well, are very pretty (they are almost as versatile in colour range as Gray Tree Frogs) and they are slightly larger than adult Gray TFs.

Thank you for your input, John.

That's pretty disappointing to hear about cb green TFs (or lack thereof...)

I wasn't able to find much on the care of H. gratiosa, but from their distribution, it seems that they may be sensitive to night time temperature drops. Do you think night temps of 60-65 F would be stressful for them? I also read that they can be quite noisey. Do you find them to be more noisey than other Hyla species?

I'm not in any hurry to bring anything home with me just yet. It'll probably be a few weeks until a proper home is ready...and with the Holidays coming up, my wallet's going to be hurting until next year anyway. This gives me plenty of time to fix up a home and find a reputable source.

    Cheers

Those temperatures are alright. I haven't kept adult Barking Tree Frogs yet so I don't know how loud they are, but all of the frogs you're looking at have loud mating calls.

The call of Hyla gratiosa isn't all that bad in my opinion.
