    Default Hello!

New to forum and to keeping frogs. Son found site when I told him on phone had bought a Pixie and he was looking for pics to figure out what a Pixie was. Good information here; loved the "Care Article" section.

Here is my Pixie, got it last weekend and already eating well and growing.

Currently housed in a 10 gal. fish tank I had around (been keeping both freshwater & saltwater fish for 48 years) with a wire mesh top that supports a double 60W bulb fixture (blue on during day and red at night). Diet is daily alternating feedings of live large earthworms, thawed fish (dusted inside mouth cavity), and crickets. Have calcium and vitamin supplements too and use them every other meal. Going with water based tank and due to frog size, do daily water changes. Once it grows a bit will set-up a nicer system with filtration, heater, and the works.

    Couple doubts I have:

    1. Store said it was a possible male due to bumps in back area behind eyes. Is that a true indicator or not? They did show me 2 other Pixies with no bumps.

    2. Have around 1/2 in. of water on tank, is that good for a 2 in. frog? Mouth is above water when it "squats" down.

    Thank you!

    Welcome to the forum!

    Beautiful Pixie!

For a frog like that, you cannot just house in water. It needs roughly 3-4" of soft soil substrate, either Eco-earth or Coco-fibre. (Can be purchased at almost all pet stores)

A water dish is more suited for this frog than an aquatic set-up. It should have about 75% land (Again, either Eco-earth or Coco-fibre) as they burrow, and 25% water, such as a large, shallow water dish. (Can also be purchsed at many pet stores.)

You should also provide it with large leaves/pieces of drift wood for it to burrow under.

As for daylight lighting, they no not require high wattage bulbs such as reptiles as amphibians do not bask, use an Exo-Terra "Repti-Glo 2.0" CFL bulb for the frog in the day time, this si all it needs. The red light that you are using at night is not required, and thus IMO should NOT be used.

Thank you for welcome and care information Royce! Will keep in mind when remodeling set-up. Light fixture heat lamps are used round the clock to keep tank warm since house thermostat is kept between 70-75F through the year.

If you would like to keep the temperature at a normal, steady level, use a under-tank heat pad. The lights are hard on the frog, and frogs like darkness at light, the red light may be disturbing it.

Also, just to let you know, when you do remodel that tank, it is not an option to have a land portion of the tank, it is a MUST.

Welcome Mentat! Great to see another pixie frog enthusiast. The care sheet written for this species is awesome, isn't it? He's got a lot of brown on him for being a P. adspersus, interesting.

Thanks Mark! The care sheet is great, specially to a beginner like me. If not an ABF... what species could it be?

It's a true African Bullfrog (giant), not dwarf. I just meant that it's unusual to see one with that much brown on it - never really seen that before. You can tell it's a giant because of the three green stripes that go down their back as babies all the way until they sexually mature.
