Default Where can I order some wood frogs?

I need to raise wood frogs. Where can I order up some? I built a nice habitat for them. I have a Southern Leopard Frog hanging out in it, but I need some wood frogs.

It's almost impossible to find CB wood frogs, but once they come out of hibernation in the spring I can send you some, $15 a frog + shipping? I will probably be able to catch 3 or 4 by the end of april

I will probably buy what you can catch in April. Check with me first though. Hopefully I don't have to wait THAT long to get some.

Dalton is right in the fact that it is extremely difficult to find Captive Breed Wood frogs. However, (no offense to you Dalton), I would not advise having wild caught Wood frogs shipped to you. Wood frogs are like humans: some can easily acclimate to transitions (i.e. a move to another city) and some have a harder time of doing so. Similarly, some Wood frogs can easily cope with being captured and placed into captivity, while other Wood frogs will become so stressed out that they will refuse to eat and then die. I have seen this happen several times. Because Woodies can become so stressed upon capture, shipping them to another location would increase their amount of stress enormously. By the time the frogs have gotten to their destination, they could well be on the verge of unrecoverable sickness or death.

Frogs and the law are also another important factor in this matter as some frogs are protected in certain areas. Before capturing, let alone shipping frogs to another location, you should always check with your local wildlife/fish & game office on the laws for capturing native amphibians. For example, here in Alaska it is a violation of the law to capture Wood frogs without a permit authorized by the fish and game division. You can even be fined for selling these frogs within the state, without authorization.

There are Wood frogs in Alabama, though they are rare and local in distribution. They have been documented in 12 locations, including the eastern Ridge and Valley and upper Piedmont from Mount Cheaha, in Talledega County, south to Horseshoe Bend in Tallapoosa County. The frog breeds in January to February in woodland pools, in these areas. The best time to capture Wood frogs, would be during their mating season as they are easy to locate via their calls. It might be well worth your while to investigate this further and consider acquiring some Wood frogs from your own state.

I know you want Wood frogs and it’s understandable. I’m not saying don’t accept wild caught Wood frogs from another place. I’m just trying to say be careful in your decision. It is your decision, not mine. It would be a real disappointment though if you acquired some Woodies and they died shortly afterward or were dead upon arrival.

Thanks. I may investigate the Jan/Feb mating season here in Alabama, but it is so VERY rare to find them. I need them for science research so I will order some if I have to. I won't be sacrificing any for the research, but if they pass away naturally I can dissect for this project as well. So unfortunately, (will prevent at all costs) even a deceased wood frog will help me some.

Your welcome! Oh cool, what kind of research are you doing? I would be very interested in hearing more, that is if you wanted to share. I am doing a vocalization experiment with the Wood frogs I have now. Here is a link to the post if you are interested:

right now they are out of stock, but they might get more later on. I don't know if they are captive bred or not.

I would strongly advise against collecting frogs from the wild and selling them. I don't know about Rhode Island, but here in Massachusetts it's illegal to collect native wildlife and sell it. You can't even sell native wildlife that you have bred yourself.

Hmm, good point Kurt. I'll have to check the laws, and if an online breeder/supplier has frogs I'd rather the buyer go through them, I was just gonna send him some due to it being for science. Thanks for the heads up!
