Default New addition to the Pyxie family!

    Hello fellas,

Went to the local reptile store to pick up a few feeder rats for my snakes, and while looking around, saw they dropped the price of the Dwarf pyxie frogs from $25, to $10. I asked the guy at the shop why, and he said because the manager is kinda tired of everyone wanting giant pyxies, and not even showing the dwarf's any interest.

I kinda played the guy a bit, told him about my pyxie, showed him pictures on my phone and stuff, told him "well I wouldn't mind having a dwarf, and taking one off your hands, but I would need a "deal" to take one home" So a little more haggling, and I took this guy home for EIGHT BUCKS!

I think he looks awesome..... I'm not to good with dwarf's, but looks like a male to me, but I could be wrong. This one also had the best colors. The other two didn't have the stripe down the back, and they where also a more DULL/BLAND green, didn't have the yellow on the sides, and not attractive at all. I would say he is 3" SVL or so.

(better pictures when I can get him out into the sun, for some better lighting)

Right after these pictures he ate 3 medium/large dubia, NO problem, was very aggressive. But once a roach got on his back, he was done, was trying to jump out his little bin.

going to have him in water for right now, trying to decide if I wanna try and house him with my other pyxie, and create a new home for both, or what im going to do. Not really sold on the idea of housing them together.

    Hope you like 'em!

    Rob

Yup ,alot of dealers lost alot f money on these frogs. I know one in Cali that ordered 50 pieces and lost money on them. No one wants these sweet fellas. The giant pixie over powered them . Sweet deal good for you. I bought mine for 20.

Right, and I think they have had the dwarf's for around 5-6 months. So if you consider the cheapest they got them was $5 each, and 6 month's of feeding them, They have to be in the hole as far as over all cost for these frogs.

Kinda thinking I wanna go get the other two, and set up a 40gal tank for them, like they where in the store. now that would be cool!

Here you don't see that many dwarfs. Come to think of it, I've never encountered any dwarf pixie here in Europe.

I wouldn't have been able to pass on those either. Snatch them all up. Nice buy.

Your dwarf is adorable! They don't have them here that I've seen. I agree, go snatch up the rest of them and make a 40 gallon.

I've always thought Dwarf Pyxies were cute. All the agression and looks of a ABF in a compact size Lol! nice buy. Now go get the other 2 and set that 40 up.

Interesting, I imagine its just harder to get animals/reptiles over all, so they only bring in whats high in demand?

Yea, kinda how it went. I figure for $8, and me being able to feed it for "free" because I have a good dubia colony, plus I heat an entire room for the critters, so its not costing me anything more then it was there ether.

BTW, What do you use to treat the water for your tank? I've been using the standard aquarium/fish water treatment, but after reading about how dangerous bad water is for frogs, I've been thinking maybe theres something out there better for 'em?

haha, tell me about it! It's a good idea, but we have quite a few reptiles at the moment. Have to see what I can do to make some room or something.

haha, I've always been a haggler, or do they call that being cheap? lol. Having my one year old son in my arm's made it easy, lol.

Good price Rob, he's got good colors. I'm not particularly into these species, but I know they're harder to come by than the south african giant. I saw a Tanzanian Dwarf Bullfrog (P. edulis) at the LLL that's near me. It was when I picked up my P. adspersus.

Thanks buddy. I figured for the price, and the fact its really not going to cost me any extra month to month made it worth it. Plus I just dig there colors.

Last night before work it ate another 3 dubia, and had a poop for me to clean up. Lots of cricket head's in its poop, so I'm sure it will have a growth spurt now that its getting dubia

Yeah ReptiSafe is a good one (I use it), if your tap water smelled strong like pool water... You would probably have to pick up some heavier duty dechlorinator, but that should be fine for you and adds beneficial electrolytes to the water (Calcium).
