    Default New build

So this is a terrarium build I did for some salamanders I have but I figured I'd post it here as I'm not active on caudata or any other forums. Let me know what you guys think and any suggestions are welcome. It's a 20 gallon long and I have a false bottom and there is a hide on the left and right side of the terrarium. Also both hides have removable lids so I can easily access my sals as needed. Also tried to make the water bowl pretty natural looking.

Looks nice, but I'm not expert on salamanders (yet ). What kind of salamander are you keeping in there?

Two baby fire salamanders. Right now they're in a 10 gallon which is plenty big but I figured I'd build something bigger that they can hopefully live the rest of their lives in.

What kind of fire do you have? Really love them myself. The tank looks nice, but be prepared for a lot of cleaning, because they "produce" quite a bit. Are you going to use a lid? I would suggest using mesh, because they need proper ventilation and dry area's. Using a lid can cause too much humidity, depending on which species you've got. I don't think you need to keep one end of the tank moist, because you've made a little puddle. You could use some cork bark for the dry area.

I don't use any lid/mesh at all. Instead I use ledges which prevent them from climbing out. They can be escape artists, especially when they're moist. These are only little suggestions of course. I really like your tank and the fact that you're using a false bottom. Would like to see some pics of your fires too Come visit caudata some time.

Niels-Thanks for the info but these aren't my first salamanders. I've had spotted and tiger salamanders when I lived in Illinois. I have a screen top that I have partially covered with Styrofoam to keep in some humidity. Been on Caudata a few times and if I have any questions about my sals I'll go there.

Royce-Both hides are just big mounds of great stuff that I carved and hollowed out. Sawed off the tops and have some thick wire that keeps the tops on. Wanted to have removable hide tops for easy cleaning/monitoring.

Creative solution and well executed! Looks nice and I imagine it's easy to maintain.

Thanks martin. There's actually quite a bit of room in the right hide, the left one is a little smaller. Put a good amount of coco fiber in both of them and since my Sals are tiny right now I'm sure they will be pretty happy.

Nice! In The Netherlands we're not allowed to keep all the Salamandra salamandra sp, so I envy you a lot. Thanks to your thread I'm now thinking about using a false bottom myself for my infraimmaculata. Hope you don't mind

Not at all! I just prefer it to avoid over saturation and possible mold issues.
