I decided against the misting, since he's stressed. I found a lamp that can go up to a 60watt bulb, so my bases are covered. I put him back in his tank as I got the temp up to 80F XD YAY!
I got a new batch of crickets a few days ago that seem hardier than the previous. They look different too. They're darker and their bodies are heavier. Their eggs also seem to hatch at 75-80F as apposed to the 90F needed for the other ones...unfortunately I learned this by watching them hatch in my pacman's 10gal. not cool...I've removed as many as I can find at the moment and put a carrot in there so they won't think my Jr is lunch. I have a cricket breeder tank and I just keep moving them into there. Maybe I can get a hardy hybrid out of it^^ Our African Butterfly Fish seems to like these new crickets more than the old ones.
Good job getting the temperature up! The crickets might be Jamaican Field crickets, they get a lot bigger, tend to be hardier than the common Brown cricket, and have a black-brown body with a orange-brown shiny head.
You can still mist the sides of the enclosure because you'll need to keep the humidity up. Just if he's stressed don't spray him directly. I'm pretty sure people have already started a hybrid breed of cricket from the common Brown cricket and Jamaican Field cricket although I'm not entirely sure (For immunity to the cricket paralysis virus that was wiping out all the crickets). I guess you'll find out.![]()
I'm sure someone has, but I haven't. That description sounds about right for these guys. I think I'm going to try to get a breeding population going. I have enough tiny babies for my Pacific, but Jr eats A LOT!
Congrats on getting the temp up where its needed. Hopefully you can worry less now that he's warm. He should be able to properly metabolize his food as well. I still worry about my frogs everyday even though I know they are fine. Its a parent thing and they are my little babies even though Grif is getting huge to where she doesn't fit my hands anymore Lol!
I worry about all my animals especially when I spend a night away from them. My mom will feed my fish and dogs, but she won't go anywhere near my frogs or the crickets. When my dad found out I had a tadpole, he flipped, then freaked when I got another frog. Especially since the second frog is going to get huge. He loves snakes but believes frogs are evil. no clue on that one...
The whole thing about your dad loving snakes but thinks frogs are eveil makes no sence to me considering that in most religions the Devil used a snake as a vessel to corrupt Eve. Unless he believes they are used by witches Lol! Not wanting to really have any religious discussions just pointing that out.
Well...we're a family of pagans, so I think it's more of a preference thing. No clue really. I like snakes, but I also like my frogs.
On another note, Jr is not liking the added light, so I only leave it on for maybe an hour then switch it to my Pacific's tank. I still can't think of a better name than #2 for her...The numbers were just so I didn't get attached in case they didn't live. Jr is picky about his crickets now, these new ones are very docile and just sit around. The light really does make all the difference in his temp, though. He closes his eyes when it's on, i'll have to make him a little hide for that.
Pagans no problem. That's why I said not wanting to get in a discussion about religion. Not wanting to offend anyone. I have many friends that are and some family. I like all animals.
On the light. Does Jr close the eyes completely or just the pupils? Getting a fake plant and plcing it under the light will help. Probably isn't used to having a brighter daylight cycle. Shouldn't harm too much. If you can rotate the head of the lamp maybe you could rotate it indirectly so its no directly above the tank. If the temp stays up then that will help.
I love most animals, some insects will never get on my good side (centipede type ones...o_O)
He closed his eyes completely, but opened them when I moved the lamp. I never have it directly on him. I'll use some kind of hide for him, I just have to get it.
He's still being a brat on eating these new crickets. i'll give him a bit before I really start to worry. He ate yesterday, so I think he's okay for now.
