For two weeks or so my red eyes have NOT been eating their crickets or mealworms, but they weren't getting any thinner (they look... bigger) and they're not any less active than they've been. Well today I got a better look at one of the logs in their tank. There's got to be at least a hundred little tiny flies and hundreds more tiny little sacs hanging off the bottom of the log. The top is just a screen top but I haven't seen them above it or anywhere in the room, they seem to be containing themselves in the tank. Is it okay for me to just leave them? It's kind of a cool little self-sustaining terrarium now that it has its own food source. The log was from my backyard (I don't treat the yard with anything) and I rinsed/lightly bleached it and left it to dry for a few days before I baked it a little. It's been in there for a long time and I've never seen the flies before. Maybe they came in off my plants?
If they're very small, they may be fungus gnats. Hard to believe red-eyes could live on those though. I don't see the harm in leaving them alone.
