from what I've heard, the cranwelli pacman frogs lose their colors as they get older whereas the ornates keep their color

They don't loose. They transform in to new colors. Baby frog types like pacman& the african ground frogs when they are babies they are very colorful so they can blend in the plants so they wont get eaten. The adults are a good blend with the ground so they can ambush there prey.
