    Question Gender?

So I have always assumed that my older pacman Grif is a male. Mainly because he made cheeping noises when he was younger. I had read that the females didn't make any noise (I now know that isn't true) so I assumed that he was male. I've had him for a little over seven months and he just hit the four inch mark, so maaaaybe a reassessment is in order?? Here are some recent pics:

I don't see any nuptial pads on his thumbs, what does Grif's stomach and chin/chest look like? Does he had spots on his stomach and chin/chest or is it near all white?

Lots of spots (I forgot to mention that; it was the other reason we thought he was a boy.) They were very dark and discernible when he was younger. Now they are still there but much lighter.

Grif is only 7 months old? I'm not really convinced that he is a he, without those nuptial pads on his thumbs he gives me the feeling he's a she

I don't know too much about pacmans as of right now. (I just got mine today, but I've researched for months) But I did read about the pads on the fingers, basing it only on my reading, I would say Grif is a she. Hope I could help somewhat!

He could be a she. It doesn't matter to me really what sex he/she is. Its just strange because he/she did stop growing for a while at 3.5 inches and has not made any call sounds but when we brought him/her home he/sh made a cheeping sound an diid growl at me once when I tried to get dirt away form his/her eye. From what I understood females make no sounds at all. Except like grunting sound which I have never heard.

Nope doesn't look that way. I was hoping for a late bloomer Lol! A large male would have been awesome. Doesn't change anything for me. I still love my frogs and ill probably end up with a monster 6 inch female maybe during that period when she didn't grow was determining sex lol! Doesn't matter. She isn't agressive at all. I thought females were silent. She actually growled at me before. No hiss, but a growl.

Does the nuptual pad always appear at 3 inches and 8 months or does it differ depending on the frog? Does the pad appear on the inside of the thumb or the outside? Does that differ depending on frog?

The pad appears when the frog is hormonally mature.......it could be smaller than the 3 inches and it could be younger than the 8 months or even older. It does differ depending on the frog. We have some frogs that grow slower than the rest.....as a result, they take longer to mature.

The Nuptual pads will be on the thumbs......anywhere from under the toe to on top of it depending on the frog.

How old is the frog in question again? We do not breed our females until they are at least a year old, but I prefer to wait until they are a year & a half old. The males, like most reptiles & amphibs, do not need to be as old as that. Some will mature quickly and be ready to spawn at 8 months and other will not be ready until they are over a year old.

If you look at the photos I posted earlier, you will see that the beard is not darker on males as some information states. And some of us have also stated that the face being flatter is not always 100% sure. ALL of them will scream in defense if provoked (Males & Females)......and many will grumble when misted.
Good Luck with breeding.....it is work and make sure you are prepared for all the tadpoles!!

I actually thought this as well. Because mine growled when he/she was angry with me for wipping substrate from his/her eye. I know the spots on the chin aren't an accurate assesment because both Grif and the baby have them and I've seen several photos of males and females no to mention the photos from Jessica that show both genders having them. It is possible to have a transgender frog. All animals can have this mutationa. But one gender is usually favored and fully works while the other reproductive organs are inert. So who knows. I guess we've all got so much more to learn. Being taught everyday Lol!
