I don't think it's deadly, rather that it is caustic.

In my ignorance, when i first heard about using unbleached paper towels as substrate, i thought unleached meant with no added pigments, no designs. As a result, i started using ordinary white kitchen paper towels, and have been doing so for years. I have to say, i´ve successfully raised with that method many animals, from morphing to sub-adulthood, and i´ve kept with no apparent problems several adults for long periods of time on the same type of set-up.
I´m not saying this to defy anyone´s opinion about bleached paper towels, but i think that perhaps they are not so dangerous. Mind you, i´ll be changing to unbleached as soon as i can get hold of it.

I'd very much like to see what goes into bleached paper towels in Europe. I've got a feeling it will be a little different to the US.

Yup probably even different by country. I believe that you can never be too careful with your pets so I usually try to avoid anything that is considered harmful.
