As above, my tank is 12 inches high, substrat will be about 3inches, so do i need the tank lid, is it to stop him jumping out or to keep humidity in??

It obviously depends on size, but my 4'' pacman can jump like 2 inches. They can lunge pretty far just not very high. It's still a good idea to keep a lid on it because in the unlikely case it escapes it's likely to dry out and die. Plus it does help hold in humidity and heat.
