Hi Royce:

Making noise is what male toads like do Most species of toads are nocturnal. I don't think removing the female would do any good. The male will probably increase his calling thinking he is going to attract a mate. A dim night light might work, go ahead and try it. American toad females choose their mates based on the individual characteristics of the male's call.

Putting up with calling frogs is one of the "hazards" of keeping frogs. I keep African clawed frogs and their call is very loud and can be easily heard throughout the house. The cool thing about this species is that both males and females call so I listen to a duet every night. Often, the duets can last several minutes. I am used to the calling and can't sleep without it
