Got this guy today from a guy who wanted to release him into wild again. Decided to take him on rather him go from wam house to 45F over night, and not know where to go or where to hibernate.


If my research was right, he/she is a Fowler's Toad. Im by no means a frog/toad expert, as i Breed Snakes for Living but this guy is on display in the Snake Room.

What would be the best thing to feed him, Since i know he was wild caught at one point of his life, since their not legal to sell, but legal to Catch and raise. I was thinking of Doing Crickets and Small Dubias. I do breed and produce 500+ mice a month and pinkies COULD be given if needed but i want to stay away from that.

But this is how hes setup in the Snake Room. has a Lil hide that is humid and rest of tub is dry. Shallow water disk about .5" deep of water on Repti bark to allow burrowing. I just got him today so hes going to be left alone for about 3 days or so till i go and get some crickets for him.

Any advice on if Crickets or Dubias are better.

I have 2 young Fowler's and feed crickets, moths, flies, inch worms, meal worms (I crush the heads first), wax worms (very high in fat) and beetles. I like to give them variety. I also have the tank set up with rock layer, organic soil, eco earth, cypress mulch then leafy moss. Also wonder if having the toad in the snake room will cause major stress to the little thing. Here's the set up for the toads I tend to.

Hi Rich. You will definitely enjoy watching that new toad. My only suggestion would be to change out that reptile bark with some plantation soil or eco earth. The bark, although retains moisture, if accidentally swallowed by the frog, can be fatal.

They also like to get under things to escape the light so a small low lying plants would give he/she a place to feel more secure.
As for feeding, what ever you choose, just try to provide something no longer than the width between the frogs eyes.

Thanks George. I know they are just toads and frogs but they are sooo much fun to feed, watch and yes, play with. I take the toads outside and "walk" them around the yard so that they can really stretch their legs. Then at night with the lights out I use a lazer light for them to chase in their tank. My husband just looks at me, smiles and shakes his head. I've played with reptiles and amphibians since I was 5. That's 46 years for enjoying these critters.

The Snake Room stays fairly dark, almost a dusk all day long. and Hovers at 78-80F all year. I checked on him this morning and he was 100% burrowed under the repti bark. He has gone in the humid hide as i dont want to keep the entire tub moist. hes settled in really well and utilized everything, even soaking in the water.

I may just do crickets and dubis, being easier to care for.. When i got time i will be going over the left over Melamine wood from the snake racks, and make a display for him.

Gail, I notice you have a small conifer tree in your tank, I read somewhere that conifer trees and needles can be dangerous for toads...?

I plan on making a display cage similar to this but with screen top thats hinged to open either side. And make it about 24x12x12.

Royce, The stone quarry down the road where I found the 2 toads is mostly pines and cedars. Since they are wild caught I'm using as many local things as possible. The way they plow over the tree I don't have much hope of it lasting long, it's more for me than them. They have pretty much taken out all the other plants I've put in there also. When they come out to hunt they just run over every thing, and each other. Who needs cable to watch, I got toad tv.

I have a question for you, what are you using for a light, to keep the plants growing? Is that just a standard Aquarium hood? I have a 10 gallon, and need to figure out a top for it...?

Whens the normal time for them to come out of burrowing, and eat. Day Night or dont matter. I dont expect him to be settled in right away, but i got 2 crickets in with him right now after gut loading em few hours. He dont care as hes burrowed sleeping. Guessing Night time hell come out and eat em

I think the lil guy answered that question for me. Cant find the 2 crickets in the Tub. Unless their able to burrow in the bedding, which i doubt. So Id have to say he ate them both.

I don't think there is one answer to this, since my toads are in an out of hiding all day long when I'm home. But I feed them once a day around 7 pm and I feed them with tweezers so I know they are eating and getting the calcium and minerals they need. My experience is if I just dust and let them in the tank the bugs can remove the dusting before the toads get to them. Also crickets can get under the bedding.

I put 3 Crickets in total last night and cant find either of them. I was digging around and still cant find em. He stays hidden almost all day either in the Humid hide or under the bedding.


I saw he was awake in the humid hide, so i tossed him 2 crickets and didnt hesitate to eat em. So Now just want to build him a display setup and get the Dubias. Im happy how well hes settled down.
