I am about ready to transform my 15 gallon tall into the tadpoles new home. When they get thier front legs they get moved if I am right. The bottom can hold about 3 inches of water. I dont know the best set up for this age of whites.
I was going to fill up the 3 inches with water, put in a small wooden branch from my hermit crab tank (cleaned of course) in the bottom. For the plants I am just going to do a few fake plants, one being the one in thier current all water set up.
Do I need to do anything else, or do something completely different? How soon after I move them will I need to change it to a regular whites set up?
While they're that young, you should probably have most of the bottom filled with water - but sahllow enough for them to sit and breathe air, so about half an inch. When they are young they aren't always smart enough to climb to get out of the water, especially if panicked and short of breath. Other than that, your setup sounds great![]()
Thanks. So far they havent grown thier front legs so I did an inch and went ahead and moved them because they I can see the front legs but they havent come out yet. Atleast thats what it looked like. They have recently started to stick thier noses out of the water. So I am thinking they are doing practice breathes? Not sure just a thought. I put the plants low in the water but still left them plenty of room to swim. They seem to be doing ok this morning just lots of hiding. But I would expect that. When I see a front leg fully out I am going to lower the water. I may just do it Sunday which is my normal water changing day for fish tanks. Not that they are really in a fish tank any more but thier water still needs to be changes.
They probably are practicing the act of breathingmy toad and frog tadpoles all started to do that shortly before their front legs appeared. once they get front legs fully then you could add a slopped rock on one side, just make sure the water is deep enough to swim in almost completely submerged, and shallow enough for them to sit up and breath! Good luck! Also, White's can usually climb very well as soon as they develop all four legs! make sure the lid is secure

The 15 gallon is a exo terra and cant hold that much water because it has the side doors it is just a size reference. But it is an awesome small tank, just wont hold all our frogs. Thanks for the advice.
