My red eye tree frog pees on me… and wow what a shot… its like a water gun… my other tree frogs puddle if they pee… but the red eye… shoots it… is this a defense… or just an action? Tired of changing my shirt every day…

My 2 White's squat 'n' squirt
The first time I saw it, I was almost wetting myself with laughter!! They've not done it on me yet, just in their tank. Shameless creatures![]()
LMAO.... I got bitten by an ostrich once there... I had a polo shirt on and he bit at the logo... god did that hurt...
When i take my painted turtle out of the tank, she always pees on my foot! Funny frog By the way![]()
this is a defensive behavior, retf, as with most frogs retain as much moisture as they can, when you pick your frog up and it "pee's" it is actually depleting its reserve of water, and when doing it on a daily basis it is not good. handle this species when you have to only, I.E. cage cleaning.
Generally pet frogs become accustomed to people enough not to empty their bladder every time they're picked up, but these are definitely a "look, don't touch" pet.

My White's Leonidas squirts people that he isn't used to handling him. He's never squirted me, so I assume he's used to me. How long have you had your red eye? Because it could just be that it is insecure around you, right now. At least that's what I've learned from Leo. He's squirted four of my friends- so I usually take him away from the foreign handler and cradle him in my palm for a while. I wouldn't reccomend picking your red up as much if it is constantly squirting you- he/she could become dehydrated.
Red-eyes are generally much more skittish than White's, so I would only handle them when its absolutely necessary.
Mine actually did that to me the first time I ever picked him up. Then he immediately jumped all over me until I finally got him back in his cage.
He never did that again though. Even when I irritated him by swiftly picking him up when he got too close to my heating vent and he croaked his frustration. (I don't think he'd fit inside that small an opening but better safe then sorry.)
