Default Shipping frogs (warning graphic dead frog pictures)

I received a package of frogs that were shipped to me today. I don't want to name the party who shipped the frogs as this post is not really about bashing an individual but more about a training lesson for people who mail out frogs. The frogs were placed in an insulated card board box with newspaper around the 4X2 inch deli cup. The cup had holes in it which were very smooth and nothing about it was potentially dangerous. But the shipper chose to pack the deli cup with cuttlings that had very thin strands of roots coming off of them. One of the frogs got his legs and lower body caught in the vines and then as he stuggled to get free it proceeded to wrap around the frogs lower body pretty tight and it eventually killed him. Please be careful about what you put in with the frogs in the deli cup. Wet paper towels can fall on top of the frogs and smother them. Different people use different size deli cups and different things in the cup. Perhaps those that ship frog regularly can share with others what ways they have found is the best way to ensure a live arrival.

Sorry for your loss Cheri. I ship thumbnail dart frogs _a lot_. Unless there's a very good reason, I always ship them in individual deli cups. The only material I use inside the cup is either 1-2 large leaves that are just small enough to fit inside, or some creeping fig.

I ship ACF and the best media I found to ship them in is very small cut-up pieces of sponges, lightly damp. The key is to make them small enough so that the frog can push through them, and not so much water that any can drip out to pool in the bottom of the shipping container - any pooling can drown the frog.

I have received and shipped frogs this way with success.
72 Gallon Bow - ACF and GF tank.
26 Gallon Bow - ACF tank.

20 Gallon Long - ACF tank.

Thanks John. I've had some pretty bad luck as of late. I think I'll just stop ordering anything on-line anymore. I'll just stick with local people or from people where I can go pickup the frogs or product. Getting people to mail out product after you've already paid seems to be getting harder nowadays with this bad economy. But that's for another thread.
