Pyxie acting strangely....

I received my pyxie about a week ago, so he is still very young. He is just sitting there, and his eyes are non-responsive. I just moved him onto coco-fiber. Temp is currently 80 degrees, with 60% humidity. I has gotten cold at night, down to 70 degrees. Not sure what is wrong with him...

Are his eyes hazy or cloudy, he might of got an infection. Is he acting lethargic right now? Keep him in a stable clean environment, (temps 80-85 - humidity 70-80%). Have you given him vitamin or mineral supplements with his food yet? If symptoms persist I would consult a local herp vet.

No, his eyes are not cloudy at all, he is just super lethargic, usually he will try and hide, and just be more active. I just took him out of a stable environment, and put him in his permanent home. Would this have anything to do with it? yes i have been feeding him mineral dustings with his crickets. Also, He is about 3in, how many crickets should he be eating in a 15 minute time?

For a 3 inch pixie, probably around 15-25 adult crickets in a 15 minute feeding limit. If he is trying to hide, could be a number of reasons: Stress (Too much human contact, displaced from getting moved into a seperate container). You could try covering up 3 sides of the tank with dark material besides the front view, give him time he should settle down. He should only look 'lethargic' in the daytime, these frogs are nocturnal so they will become active at night after resting the entire day. Burrowing, hiding, basking, give any of the circumstances. Do you give him anything else besides crickets? Crickets don't have a whole ton of nutritional value, only if they're properly gut loaded 24 hours before feeding time will they give any potential amount of nutrition for your frog. More variety the better, I need to practice it too ! I feed mine, crickets and large night crawlers. The night crawlers are an excellent source of protein and very easy to keep. By mineral dustings, you mean you're only using calcium and d3? You need to get a multivitamin as well to get the extra vitamins lacking from the diet herps get in captivity. Calcium supplement can be offered 2-3 times a week, and multivitamin once a week. Other than that proper temps and humidity is all I can say, if things get out of hand still... Then I can't really help you anymore, you'll need to go to a vet.

Ok sounds good, well mine appears actually to be a little more active during the day, and less at night. I just ordered a dubia roach colony, there was a sale on theroachguy.com, and it was really cheap for 210 mixed roaches. I will definetly have to feed him some nightcrawlers. I did not know that they will eat that many crickets, I only feed him around 10. That may be the problem. I actually only have the multivitamin, I need to pick up more d3. I did not know that they will eat that many crickets, I only feed him around 10. That may be the problem. I actually only have the multivitamin, I need to pick up more d3. Great! Dubia roaches are an excellent source of diet for your frog. It takes about 3-4 months for your colony to be well established before you should pick out of it unless you want to buy more for the ones that are taken out by you. Yeah it's not like I just throw in an exact amount of crickets for him in a 15 minute feeding time, I just throw a bunch in there and whatever he doesn't eat, he doesn't eat. Based on the amount of crickets I told you is how much mine usually eats in a 15 minute feeding time and also that he is close to your pixies size. If the multivitamin doesn't already have calcium and d3 in it, you'll need to pick up a supplement with calcium + d3. If your multivitamin already has d3, then just a calcium supplement, and so forth.. You get the point. They don't need a whole lot of d3, but it helps them absorb the calcium in take for their growing bones. Obviously the multivitamin offered once a week is very beneficial for their health. 2:1 Calcium-Phosphorus ratio found in calcium supplements is good. Np man, if you need anything else...
