If you are using egg crate then I usually just wrap the screen over the edges of the egg crate then then place the egg crate into place.

As for on top of layer of hydroballs or similar, I cut enough to have a inch of extra on all sides to reduce the chance of the layer above from blending into the layer below. I just place this screen on top and have the top substrate hold it in place.
