Maybe this is normal but i have never seen it before. Awhile back i posted about how my Grey tree frogs likes to hang out in the waterfall for hours, still does this. Something new now. i could not find him anywhere in the tank(this has happened before also. But i was determined to find him this time),never thought to look on the bottom of the tank fully underwater. He blended in with the rocks and almost didn't see him. There he was he looked dead, i went in to retrieve him and to my surprise he was alive. Took him out put him on land and he when right back underwater and came out after some time?Yes he is a Grey tree frog from CT. I posted pics to confirm. Is this some type of weird hibernation since it is getting cooler(tank is at in house room temp around 60 Deg). I would think he would do this on land. Has anyone seen this before or know why he does this?
I would definitely try to raise the temperature.
I know some frogs hibernate that way but I'm not sure about Gray Tree Frogs specifically. (Here in Northern Maine woodfrogs hybernate that way. They breathe through their skin and because they're not active they don't need so much oxygen that they require their lungs) Need to make sure the water stays oxygenated though. (Assuming you're okay with him hybernating right now)
Yeah keeping the water oxygenated with an air stone would be good
I have seen grays swim to the bottom of a pool to avoid predation, maybe the same thing is happening.
He is the only one in the tank. No predators. Should i use a water heater to warm the tank up?
I would recommend a light for heat. Do you think he goes underwater when you are around, he might think that you are a predator.
No. No one was even in the room.He seems very social. He also chirps a lot when i am in and out of the room
A submerisible aquarium heater will work. There is one in my White's enclosure.
I would just try to make sure the frog cant touch it.
Is 60 deg to cold for Grey tree frogs? What is the best temp to keep them at? Do they hibernate by season or by temp? What temp would they start to hibernate at? Do they hibernate underwater?
They hibernate by temp.
I think its by seasonal cues, such as temperature and shorter light periods. They won't be burned a submersible aquarium heater.
Hmm really I have always been recommended that you make it so the animal cannot touch them.
With an aqauarium heater IN the water you don't have to worry about it burning the animals. You will have to monitor it to make sure it doesn't overheat the water.

Grays will eat and be active at 60. They don't "hibernate" until it gets much cooler - into the late 40s (9 degrees C).

Anyone have any ideas why he is going underwater and staying there?
Possibly it's not humid enough.
