Lighting Questions??

Hi guys,

I just finished my 10 gal. Vertical tank. but now my question is how do I light up the tank. Do the plants need a special light? would they benefit from a light? If so how do i add it if the top is glass and no UV rays will go pass the glass?

Also i found this light that will fit in the 10 gallon tank but is this a good idea? It has day and night lights. Plz check out this link and let me know your opinions on it or your suggestions.

Eli, is it just for the green tree frog? You don't need UV for the vast majority of frogs. Here is what I would do for a single 10 g vert. I would get one of these: http://www.joshsfrogs.com/lighting/f...mpact-top.html

And put a Daylight compact fluorescent light bulb in it, say 20 watts. You can buy the GE brand of that bulb in packs of 2 for less than 10 dollars at Walmart. Just make sure it says daylight on it. Those bulbs are 6500 K colored light. Don't get the soft or warm white bulbs.

Thanks John, I like this idea you gave me, But what about a night light?

Ill go to the store and check that one out and compare. My other concern is size i dont want something too bulky looking.

If i were to go with the other light will it be ok?

The light you linked is going to be a a few inches too wide to sit on the top of a 10 gallon vert comfortably. The one I linked is not as wide as the top of the terrarium will be (I'm using the exact setup I described on my latest dart terrarium). The light you linked generates about the same amount of light as the CFL bulb I talked about (about 1000 lumens), so they're pretty much equivalent. I bet that Marineland LED light costs a lot more though. Do you have a price on it?

I don't have any to show you but it's a horizontal, not a vert. It's still the same width though as a vert. Regarding night lighting, those aquarium night lights are usually blue and in my opinion they're too bright for frogs. We generally recommend a dim red light for night viewing. By the way, the terrarium I was talking about is the one you see on FrogTV channel 1. Tune in during the day time and you'll see what it's like.
