For shallow water areas (under 6inches), I recommend java moss, java fern, anbia, all of which can/will grow out of the water with roots submerged. These are bog or shoreline plants that will work...

instead of boilding to clean a piece of wood found outside, I bake them.... very low oven for a couple of hours. It does not burn the wood, but will kill off anything that might be hiding within it....
