It's a girl, right?

Greetings Frog Forum! I've had my first African Bullfrog for 3+ years now. I've always assumed she was a female because she never got huge. The other day I realized she really has grown since I've had her. Maybe it's possible I have a male who never got huge because I'm underfeeding as I assumed it's a female. I doubt I have a male but I'd like some of the experts here to confirm I have a girl. I took some pics this afternoon. She filled up with air to try to look bigger and she lunged at me a couple of times. She did not like her photo shoot :) Hope the pics show up here. Thanks in advance.

Have you ever heard it croak? Remember, not all males get humongous. If that is all puffed up, that looks like a boy to me. Also, aren't those the nuptial pads on his front feet?

Thanks for the reply Jimifrog. No, I've never heard it croak. I googled "nuptial pads". I'm not sure what they are exactly. Are they on the wrist of the frog or on the end of the toes. I'll have to take a better look at the frog in the daytime. I'll take pics of the front feet. Maybe I could get your educated guess.

From what I've read here, the nuptial pads are this darkened area of the frog's front feet that help him grip the female during toad's wild ride. There is a darker area on your frog's front feet. I thought that might be the pads.

Hm, this is a tough one. I'm leaning more on the side of male from the head, but if you haven't heard it croak for 3+ years, that seems a little odd. When you got your pixie, was it underfed at a young age where you picked it up or something you may have not known at the time? The only time a frog would be stunted would be if the tadpole was taken care of poorly or it was underfed at a young age. Where did you buy him or her from?

My vote = small or stunted male.

Which may very well not be your fault. If I notice a few of my grow-ups taking off size wise I tend to give them the most attention food wise, the finicky eaters still get fed as often as the other's but at times may not eat as much. If I had to guess you didnt notice significant growth and assumed it was a female, his / her head is rather big for a female, I can't really tell from the pictures but does he have slightly developed "jowls" or lumps behind his head, I have yet to see a female with those developed bulges.

Nevermind I change my vote, he is definantly a male at 6inch'es long and having that head. He is just small for whatever reason

Oh, I didn't see the 6 inches. All male. All day long. That's not stunted for a cb either.

im not a afican bullfrog expert im a pacmanfrog guy but it looks to me to be a boy you can read john article for more help

i vote male. a females head dont get that big (in proportion to the body) at that size.

Thanks for the input everybody. I took some more pics of the frog today. Hope they provide more evidence to confirm whether or not I have a female or male. One pic is a top view of the frog when it is calm and not inflated. Two more pics are of the front foot because Jimifrog mentioned the possiblity of nuptial pads. It looks like maybe there are some bumps on the foot and toes. Are those pads or just normal female feet? Very difficult for me to determine without more feet to compare them to and I'm not really sure what I should be looking for. :)

On average, how many inches long do females get svl-wise? What is the svl range for adult males?

I've never heard mine croak. Do males always croak?

I bought this frog a few years ago at a local reptile show. It was the size of a half dollar. Over the years I've fed it crickets, superworms, nightcrawlers, roaches, silkworms... whatever I have available. Sometimes it eats voraciously and other times not so great. When I bring the frog to my 1st grade classroom, the kids love the feeding demonstrations.

You got a male however his growth was probably stunted because of a mostly bug diet. You should of fed him a few more fatty protein filled mice and he might of hit 7 inches.

Females are like 4-5 inches . Males in the wild are 7-10 inches. Captive breds are 7-8
