Toad biting tongue

Rate this Entry
I found a male juvenile American toad a couple days ago outside. He chirped so nicely 4 me I decided 2 give him some cricket snacks b4 he went on his way. I noticed how he had to kind of slam his head into the crickets and use his arms. Like he had no tongue. OK Chirpy his name now showed up again last night and I observed him at length. When he does attempt to use his tongue he ends up missing the cricket and biting his tongue. The he puts it back in. Does a swallow and opens his mouth silently a few times (what I call a toad burp). He looks very healthy in all other aspects. Only I could find an orally disabled toad. Any thoughts?

I've heard of "short tongue syndrome" which is caused by too little vitamin A. Or he could just have a birth defect.
