Substrate question!

Rate this Entry
Hi, i have a white tree frog and i bought some cypress mulch to use as subsrate. After watching her eat some crickets i noticed that she would get some of the mulch too. She pulls it out of her mouth but it just makes me nervous (she is my baby lol). Is am i over reacting or should i use something else? If so what is a better/ safer substrate? Thanks!

You should get something else. Try finely ground coconut husk or plantation soil sold at pet shops. Or just use plain paper towels and replace frequently. White's tend to gulp their food and take in bits of bark or moss. That can kill them. So either feed by hand, or remove bite-size chunky things from the tank. Also, cypress wood is strong-smelling. It has oils in it that can possibly harm a frog (not entirely sure, seems likely.)

Thank you!! I picked up some loose coconut substrate, its a little messy but i feel that it will be safer for her until i can special order the forest floor mats.

Awesome. That should be much better.

Also, lots of users don't think to check the 'blogs' section. If you have a question about your dumpy, maybe try posting in 'Tree Frogs' for a quicker answer?
