Giant Green Frogs

Rate this Entry
My date nights with my boyfriend consist of herping during the late hours of the night and early morning. The most active hours for herps around here seem to be between 3:00am and 5:00am.

I have an old cistern on my property and frogs continually find their way inside (along with an occasional rat or salamander). Once in, they can't get out on their own. So, every few nights we go out with a large net attached to a very long pole to help fish the frogs out along with whatever else may have fallen in. We do this year round. Even in the middle of winter we have found frogs alive in there. We generally take those in until the weather warms up. Then they are released into my pond.

Friday night was a rather warm night. Though it was very foggy and had rained all day. We found two Green Frogs in the cistern. However at first glace we thought that they were Bullfrogs. Because they were so huge! After netting them out into a plastic bin and getting a closer look we confirmed that they were indeed Green Frogs (a male and a female). I don't think I've ever seen Green Frogs that big before. Our theory is that they may have been eating smaller frogs that had fallen into the cistern with them. Which allowed them to get to such a size.

I really wish I could have gotten a picture. But the fog had gotten so thick that I could hardly see my hand in front of my face. We quickly took the frogs to the pond and released them. Hopefully they will stick around next spring.

Green frogs - Lithobates clamitans, can reach close to 4 in. SVL without considering the legs; wonder how big were ones you found? Yes, they do eat other frogs.

Thanks for sharing story with us. Frog observing at 3-5AM in Winter... brrrr ! But then again, Friday was a strangely warm day. Please take pics of your pond next Spring and share here .
