Wow, I really like the way this is done. How did you get the dirt/soil area set? If you don't want to share your secrets I could understand..
Nothing fancy done here. Basic aquarium gravel layer on bottom (1 inch deep in front and 2 1/2 in deep starting 4 inches back) then substrate on the top of the 2 1/2 inch deep stone with screen to keep separated. The screen mater extends into the 1 inch deep layer so it can be rolled up and back to keep the substrate back and then larger stone placed to retain the rolled back screen. No pumps or filters are used and water needs to be siphoned off occasionally and replaced. I usually fill with water until I have a decent visible amount above the 1 inch deep gravel at front but not deep enough to saturate the soil.
