I think it's more, We will do this, try our best to keep them happy and comfortable, love unconditionally, and they will hate and fear us in the same fashion. <3. Our reward? PSH. That dirty little face is enough.
One of my favorite things about amphibian care is how honest they are. My cats pretend to like me so I'll feed them, but I feed them because I live in constant fear that they'll nibble me in my sleep if I forget. The toads tho? Hate me and aren't afraid to pee in fright or hide... They endure my awfulness because food items and clean soaking water magically appear when I invade.
