I think this has to be a Spotted Salamander, Ambystoma maculatum, that I found under a piece of bark near a pond. It was maybe 7cm long.

Thanks John. I'm amazed at how easy salamanders are to find. I'd never really tried before, but I've recently started overturning promising looking logs (and carefully returning them after). It really makes me watch my step now, I'm afraid of shifting a log with a delicate little salamander under it.
