I believe this is a Northern Redback Salamander, Plethodon cinereus. I found it inside of a pile of bricks I was moving. Unfortunately moving the bricks destroyed it's home, but it wasn't injured in the process and has plenty of nearby options to move to.

Looks right. Where in Canada are you again? If you're eastern side then it must be a red back.

I'm in Southern Ontario.

At first sight I thought it was a dead/squished red-bellied snake on it's back until I noticed it was 1) alive, 2) red on it's back, and 3) had feet. What can I say, I'm new at this, so thanks for the added confirmations of ID!
