Snapping turtle on a nearby bridge digging a hole to lay eggs. I kept checking on it every 15 minutes or so, and I'm fairly certain it laid eggs here. The brown vegetation behind is from the counties recent RoundUp expedition of all vegetation growing on bridges. Sigh. I hope this wasn't the turtle that tried to lay in my garden. Happily, it made it off the road without help and without getting splatted.

  1. OMG these live in the wild in your country? I would build a new religion around that turtle if I saw it outside, becoming its pawn in world domination.

Yep, they are wild here. If you don't know, I'm in Ontario, Canada. I find it just amazing that this turtle/dinosaur/mini-godzilla manages to survive the winter here in water thats surface has frozen over.

I wish everyone here had your view of them. Many people I talk to here see them as pests that go around eating baby ducks and biting off peoples toes. Everything I've read and seen about them puts them as bottom-garbage-feeders in our water systems and very timid in the water. They are ornery on land as it's their only defense.

I think good news about this ones nest- a couple weeks ago we found a dead baby snapper by the nest on the road. I take this as a good sign, only one dead by car, so hopefully a good portion of them hatched and made it away from the road for a natural shot at life/death. Their nests don't often hatch at all due to not enough heat here.
