Northern red-bellied snake, Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata, that was found on my front porch in the morning. The "red-belly" part is obviously not visible here, but the "occipitomaculata" which refers to the markings at the back of it's head are. It's a small cutie, somewhere around 10-12" long.

    I didn't keep it, but I wondered afterwards if they were adaptable to being taken in as a pet. I might actually be allowed to keep a snake of this size. Maybe someday. They aren't really rare here, just secretive and I periodically find them nesting in hay bales,
