10 gallon vertical terrariums, each for a pair of Imitator Dart Frogs (Ranitomeya imitator)
These tanks were set up about an hour before the photo. They should look a lot better in a month or so.

  1. these look great! Did you design the face yourself? or is that a lid for the ten gallon?

Thanks. Everything you see in the picture was made by myself - cut the glass, built the vents, put everything together, glued the wood in place, foamed the gaps and siliconed the background with peat, coco fibre and coco fibre chunks. I copied ideas from two places: Junglebox and Shawn Harrington's thread on Dendroboard.

Ah Ha! So that's what he has been working on! Looks great John!

Very nice John. That's where I would like to live if I were a frog. I see those little balls in lots of set ups on this Forum...What are they?

    Thanks!

Ebony - those are Light Expanded Clay Aggregate (LECA). They are a very low density clay pellet that's full of tiny air pockets. You can't see in the photo, but there is water from the bottom to half way up the LECA layer. LECA is sold under a bunch of names, mainly for hydroponic gardens. In the US it is commonly sold as Hydroton. Kurt talks about it in his tree frog care articles.

That is just amazing! I wish I had your talents when I came to designing tanks. Well done man!

Thanks! I should take an updated photo now that they have been around for 2 months. The bromeliads have grown quite a bit. The tank on the right has been the most successful - the frogs have laid several clutches of eggs since the beginning of January.
