Help with whites tree frog!!!asap!!!

We are going to need a little backstory on your frog in order to offer you advice. How long have you had him? Is he captive bred or wild caught? Did he look fine and act normal when you got him? Can you show pictures of the enclosure and your frog? How are the temps and humidity?

ive only had these two new frogs for less than a week. i had ordered them from our local pet store and they were shipped to the pet store via airplane . i dont know if she was captive or caught, i am assuming she was born in captivity.. i didnt know you could just catch them? yes when i got her she was fine, in fact more green than my other one, now she is purple as hasnt moved. the picture i have as my profile is that of winnifred. thats all i have right now, it was taken last night, she is doing no better this morning and i am really worried. i dont know about the temps and humidity i dont have a gauge , but i know i have a heating pad and it is very humid in the enclosure as there are droplets on the side of the tank. thanks for your help.

Is your tank well ventilated?

no i wouldnt say it is well ventalated... but my other frog is perfectly green , so i am assuming based on my other frog DK that everything in the tank is fine ?

More ventilation might help. Do you have a screen lid?

ok so after researching on the internet i am scared that winnifred might have spring disease? is this possible, she is still browny purple, hasnt left her water dish, and my mom noticed some white spots on her? but i remember my other frog fred that passed away have different spot on him as well... i am soo worried about her, and i dont know what to do.... HELP!!!

A photo of the white spots would help. Sometimes, those frogs just have small white spots without them being anything.

ok when i get home i will take more pics of poor winnifred and upload them... how do i do that, i am new to the forum format and this is all very confusing to me...

What I do is I upload the photos into the photo album on your profile. Once you get it uploaded, it will have a link you can use to stick photos in your posts.

I do hope your froggie will be ok btw. I couldn't remember if I said that yet.

Do try the screen lid if you dont' have one. Winnie may not be getting enough oxygen.

ok well i uploaded pics of my froggies. i put comments to tell which frog is which, enjoy and maybe you can shed some light as to why poor winnifred is acting this way. i fed them today when i got home, she had 2 crickets, but now she is hiding in a corner all hunched up and still brownish... i even changed the substrate ... hoping this get better soon

You're right, she is quite purple around the gills. My suggestions are:
1) Screen lid. Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but my fish turn that shade of purple around the gills when their water isn't oxygenated enough, and really, how different are fish and frogs? They both start with a F! >_> <_<
2) Possibly constipation - maybe she ate too big of a bug, or too much substrate (could have happened before you got her). Try giving her a warm bath (I don't remember water temperature offhand, I think 75-85 range) and see if she poops. If she doesn't, add some honey or pedialite to the water.
3) Try getting a tall, spinny (oscelating?) fan, and aim it so it occasionally blows air right over the tank (not down into the tank, just across the top).
4) If none of the above works, see if there's an exotic vet in the area. It could maybe be a parasite (something she would have picked up before coming to live with you).

Kassy, I just posted a comment on a picture. These lesions could just be by the constant rubbing on the glass. There is absolutely no leafage in this tank. No plants. These frogs might be stressed, and trying to get out. They will press themselves hard on the glass as they have nowhere to hide.

Add plants, many plants, big leaves. Natural plants if you can. If you can't, buy plastic plants, but give your frogs places to hide.

I didn't even think about that. /headdesk. I have a climbing vine (fake) in my tank, and a (real) ficus tree planted in it. They enjoy hanging out by the vine and under the tree. I also have a stick planted that they can climb on, and two ladders to climb on (a bird ladder my husband sawed in half). Plant pots turned on their sides also make nice houses, but I would add plants first.

75 degrees for the water temp.
If she ate then she is probably needed more air flow as stated. I also mist tank twice a day and mist right over the frog so I know they are getting the moisture.
Make sure your water is treated with a reptile safe dechlorinater or use distilled water.

And as stated, they definitely need places to feel hidden and like to sleep up high in the tank.
Sticks, branches, vines, big leaf plants like a Bromeliad and snake plants work well with Whites.

Just rinse off anything going into the tank and you can remove all the dirt from a Brom and stick it in a piece of cork round or straight into the substrate and it will do fine.

I whole heartedly agree. I think stress and an improper setup are probably the main cause. We seem to have a rash of people having trouble with their new frogs as of late. It would be best if people would evaluate their environmental conditions and care requirements of their particular frogs and make sure their husbandry skills are up to par. Check out the photo albums of more experienced members. Look at their tanks and setups. Ask them questions. Its important for the health of your new frog that they start off with the proper setup and environmental conditions (temp+ humidity). If these things are not met your frog can become stressed and be more suceptable to health problems and other concerns. I try to set up my photo albums based on the species of frogs that I keep. I show pictures of my tanks so people can get ideas for setting up a habitat for that particular species. I encourage others to do the same. Showing our setups are vital for new people to get started off on the right foot. I also encourage new frog owners to learn as much as you can about your frogs preferably before they are purchased. Set up your tanks and show them to the forum. Be open to critism and advice. We are here to help you in every way we can. Your frog will thank you in the long run.

im no pro... ive had these frogs before, and they thrived off of the same set up? actually this one is better, bigger tank, better and bigger water bowl and bigger lights. i am trying my best to give them the best life. i will go to the dollar store and see what i can get for plants, maybe that will make them feel better. as i said the one is super green and looks to be happy. and once winnifred ate a couple crickets dusted with calcium she greened up a little too... she is still not the greatest that i have seen her in the short week i have had her.
i have made it more ventilated. i put a screen on top, with the fish tank top on top of that... i need the fish tank top for the light, but this way with the screen i can open up where the fish tank filter was , and where the fish would be fed for more ventilation.
i hope no one thinks i am a poor pet owner, i am trying my best...

i have a big stick with two branches on it, they not seem to ever go on it, but DK ( the healthy one) has been sleeping high which i know is normal and winnifred the sick one used to sleep high but now she is sleeping low or even in her water bowl.

Kasey by no means am I suggesting that you are a poor pet owner..on the contrary...you are here on a frog forum to gain information to help ensure that you have a healthy and happy pet. That alone suggests that you are doing your best to ensure that your frog returns to good health and starts eating again. We all started out the same way... I had my Red Eye Leaf frog set up in the perfect habitat.....for a dart frog. But I quickly learned and started changing my setup to something more suitable for a tree frog. Learn from others and adapt those ideas to your situation and do it quickly.

thanks everyone for your help. after changing the substrate, feeding them crickets dusted with calcium and buying them leafage for their tank , they both seem to be happy and healthy. thank goodness, i was really worried!
i have one more question, do whites sleep with their eyes closed? they both seem to have theirs closed and i hadn't noticed that with ones i previously owned!?
