Prolapse again!

After you had helped me out when one of my frogs had a prolapse I talked to a vet that works with exotics and she said that sugar is the best way to deal with it. Also she said if you feel steady enough you can try to push it in with KY but it takes a pretty steady hand and there is the risk of tearing. She suggested if I try that to only try to push it in after the sugar treatment is done and a few hours to allow the swelling to go down.

Yeah, he has just found the water dish now and is just soaking his butt in from the ledge. I feel so bad.
I know last time it happened it was a Friday night and I couldn't get him in until Monday, but it isn't as big of a prolapse this time, so hopefully I can get it to go back in on it's own.
After it happened this first time, after I had first looked up the thing about sugar water, I had seen that some ppl used honey but I figure since sugar helped a bit last time that I would just stick to that.
He is the more skittish of my two adults too, so I hope after soaking a few hours that he is calm and I can try and push it back in. What do they recommend using to push it in? Just standard q-tip? Won't the fuzz from it get stuck on the prolapse? I suppose a lil fuzz will come out eventually and it's better than having his insides hanging out.

Although I have no real suggestion to how to gently push in the prolapse, below is a link on this topic and hopefully some useful information.

I can not stress how much you should provide something to eat that will give time for this to heal. Brian has some info on what he did in the linked thread.

One of my red eyes got a very small prolapse last summer.
I moved him into a dish to soak ( within the enclosure) in WARM filtered de-chlorinated water.
He, fortunately, stayed there for quite some time.
I watch him climb out, he slowly moved himself horizontally along the glass pulling his tummy in and out.
He actually pulled the prolapse back in! He seemed to know what to do ? Don't know- maybe I got lukcy ?

The prolapse was very small. It has not re-occurred. I did realize, a the time, that the crickets I had raised were getting a little larger in size compared to what I typically was feeding them.

Just sharing. All circumstances are different , and a vet may be necessary again?

Keep him soaking if possible. I would use warm water. Like what you would put a baby in.
I think the soaking is the trick for now if you can not get to the vet( if needed)
What size crickets do you feed?

I tried pushing it back in yesterday and manged to get most of it back in except for one little bit. And it doesn't help that he keeps crawling up the glass to sleep or flicks at it with his back legs I think he knows now though that I'm trying to help him

I have him in my spare tank with two water dishes

I've actually been feeding smaller crickets than I normally would because I've introduced my two juveniles into the same terrarium.
I'm going to keep him in my spare tank for at least a week after I hopefully get this resolved. When this happened before I tried feeding him softer worms and he wouldn't touch them, but I don't want him to starve for a week. Any ideas what else I could try in that time, or just really tiny crickets?

It was hard to do but I didnt feed mine for a week. Every night she would be out hunting in the quarentine tank looking for food. After a week I gave her a couple 2 week old crickets and waited til she pooed then I put her back in with the rest. All I feed now is 2 week old crickets and it seems to be working out fine. She hogged all the crickets from the others for the first while but then started eating normally again. Its hard to not feed them but it is for the best.

A week without food should be no problem at all for an otherwise healthy and previously well fed adult tree frog. Mine (the one in the link Don provided) went 9 days without eating and I would have held out even longer but I was going on vacation and wanted to be around for her first eating and defecating. It's a balance between hunger and time to heal.

I fed earthworms sparingly when I resumed food, and slowly upped the food intake to normal levels. Earthworms are nutritionally awesome and easy to digest. After fasting for a time, they should become more appealing, cutting them up can also help if you can only find larger ones and be sure to clean off any substrate from the worms. Even in pieces they still wriggle.

I used a q-tip with KY jelly on it to do the re-insertion, no problem with fuzz from the q-tip and it's nice and slick.

Yeah I know it won't hurt him, I just feel bad. When this happened the first time I didn't feed him for a week after and other people thought it was cruel.
I will try the earthworms, I have those for my axolotls.
Yep, I did the q-tip w jelly and there's still a small piece that I cannot get re-inserted. I'm going to give it another try in a few hours.

Ok, so I tried a few times to get the prolapse back in and I got a good amount inserted. But I gave in and just brought him back to the vet on Monday. Came out 99$ in the hole, but il just have to pay my friend back :/
They re-inserted it, put a stitch in, did a fecal test, and gave me three doses of medicine just incase it may be a parasite. So, now every three days I have to have someone hold him and then I have to open his little mouth to get a syringe in there.. But I'm glad he's doing better. I've kept him separated in his own lil temp terrarium. I tried cutting up earthworms, but he wasn't interested last night. I put a couple very small crickets in with him, and we'll see if he has an appetite tonight.

I hope he recovers Shanny. You and him will be in our prayers.
