    Default New Addition

I got a new addition to the collection today. I traded my drop-dead gorgeous amelanistic corn snake for a Chaunus schneideri AKA the rococo toad. Its huge! Makes my Colorado River toad look like a dart frog. Here he is with his previous own about two years ago.

Wow...Kurt congrats, Beautiful Frog. Is its colour slightly blue? Or black and white. It looks like a turtle with that extra bit on the back. Is he friendly with you?

I think the blue is just in the picture, he is more to the black and white side, but not purely so. He as friendly as I could expect for a Bufonid, in other words, he's no White's.
I read that females of the species get to 250 mm in SVL. The biggest of the Bufonids. Chaunus marina only gets to 225 mm SVL.

Is yours a Male or Female, cos he looks as if he's the 250mm. Id love to see the Frog move around. Is he/she fast or slow?. I imagine he/she would eat allot. You are so lucky to be able to be in contact with such amazing Frog species. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kurt, how exciting. I have never seen anything like this before ~ are these common to have as pets? I also have the same questions as Ebony - what is on its menu and how fast does it move?

They are not common in the pet trade. Last time I saw one for sale, it was $200. I guess we here in the United States (and Europe, I am guessing) have it good as far as what we can keep. But it does vary from state to state. Massachusetts doesn't allow the keeping of eastern spadefoot toads, Scaphiopus holbrookii, but other than that we can keep any frog as long as its not federally protected. I am guessing, as I am not 100% sure, but the federal list includes Houston toads, mountain yellow-legged frogs, and pine barrens treefrogs. The list is probably bigger than that.

He has the cage the corn snake had, Though I am thinking of switching the the two toads around, but then again I have a Colorado River toadlet I planned on moving in with the original one as soon as he is large enough. So maybe every one is just better where they are. The rococo doesn't have all that big of a cage, but it is way bigger than what he was in.

Are you sure about that? The Colorado River toad is in a thirty-gallon and the rococo is in a large Rubbermaid box, not sure of the volume.

There is some video floating around on YouTube of a guy feeding Rococco's and Cane's earthworms...the Rococco is huge compared to the Cane
