    Default Unken reflex!!

I was so amused by this, in all the years on and off of keeping fire-bellied toads I've never seen this behaviour before but read about it

Lifted a baby yellow-belly out to clean the viv and this is what happened

Umm.. In my country, we can easily see that behavior of fire bellied frogs in wild. Im spring season, there are lots of fire bellied frog on the road of remote regions, and when they got threatend, they act like that looks killed. I think yellow bellieds are also similar kind of fire bellied.

Keyword there being wild, I've never seen this in captivity from captive bred fire bellies, only in books. usually mine have been quite tame. I even had orientals that would wait at the glass on feeding days. Been waiting for years for this. You're so lucky, I'd love to see them in the wild. Are you originally from Europe or Asia? Fire-bellies are not form the states.

I'm not sure but in one of his posts I swear he said hes from South Korea. I had this once when I had mine but I found my guy like this in thee tank, I didn't touch him. I remember I freaked out because I thought he was dead and didn't understand what happened. Then I went to pick him up to remove him from the tank and he perked up and hopped away. I was so confused t what just happened and thought he MBD or something till I talked to the guy here at the reptile shop. It never happened again that I seen and to be honest I didn't want to happen again because it looks weird and he scared the poop out of me the little bugger.

It's amazing how frogs can look so dead or in bad shape if disturbed, dehydrated or hibernating, funny little animals! Definitely not an animal you should dispose of straight away if thought to be dead, the amount of frogs that have came back to life to my eyes if placed in water or left for a while.
