I'm planning on getting some nocturnal frogs in the future and noticed that they need heating 24 hours a day, but only need lighting for 12 hours. Would I have to switch bulbs every 12 hours with one that emits light and one that doesn't? I feel like I'm overlooking something here... but I'm just a bit lost. (And, if it matters, the frogs I were looking into were Borneo Eared Tree Frogs.)
You'd be best with a ceramic heat emitter and a UVB bulb next to the hot side. Frogs need a night time drop so any heater on all the time should be connected to a thermostat to provide the day and night temperatures for species needs. Red bulbs should not really be used as the frogs can see the light, it's just less disturbing than full spectrum light. The dark blue or purple bulbs are okay since it's like moonlight but still any bright light on all night will just annoy them. For night viewing there are blue moon LEDs that can be switched on for a few hours.
As Jason said, a ceramic heat emitter would be best. I have mine connected to a thermostat so it only goes on and off when it needs to. It is less drying and has no light to disturb your frogs.
