So is it okay that when i pick up my frog he's cold?
I have a digital thermometer measuring 85 just when i have the probe inserted just below the surface of the ground
2 heat lamps on all day, usually 2 at night, lately been 1 at night
the height of my enclosure is roughly 10-12 inches, given i have a bout 2-4 inches of terrarium dirt, distance of the heat lamps is 6-8 inches
There is a log that my frog loves to hide under, so I assume the heating lamps just don't heat him when he's under that log, but i get worried.
I have wrapped the whole enclosure in aluminum foil including the underside, but he's still quite cool when I pick him out to eat.
While I'm no expert on what body temperature a gabf should have it will always be cooler than yours thus always feel cool. If your substrate is 85 degrees I can only imagine your cooking the poor frog which would be why he is hiding under a log.
I keep one side warm with air temperature at about 85 - 90 and one side cooler at 75 -80 depending on the rooms ambient.
Too warm can potentially be as bad as too cold, what are the air temps in the terrarium?
Just a question, if you kept the temp at 78 on one side to 83 on the other side, would that be okay for a baby gabf?

I think your temps sound fine. In my opinion if your close to a 75 - 85 range you're doing good. In the summer and winter I allow for 10 degree swing and haven't had any problems. IE: at the coldest winter the temps are 65 - 75 for a week or two and in the hottest summer 85 - 95. If the high 85 or over there will always be fresh cool water available just in case. The take away here is these frogs do OK with a bit of variation.
