I recently purchased a pretty large water bowl that covers nearly 3/4 of my pacman frog's enclosure because the humidity has been dropping pretty fast recently and I don't want him to dry out. Although I noticed that even with an overhead lamp the water in the water bowl is absolutely FREEZING. Its not even lukewarm, the water is completely cold. The temperature in the cage is reading around 78-83. Does the water in the bowl need to be warm too?
Put lukewarm dechlorinated tap water in at night, so when the frog goes to use the water dish it won't be too cold
That's actually what I did and within minutes the water went from warm to cold. Granted the water bowl is on the side of the tank that isn't heated. What should I do? Put another heater over the water bowl? Because I'm pretty sure cold water isn't good for them, even if she seems pretty disinterested in using it.
Do you know how cold it is? If you're using a heat lamp you could put the water dish in the middle of the tank and it might be warmer there but the water should be cool anyway, I've never really worried about mine and had no problems. Your frog just might not feel the need to go in it if temps and humidity are good
The new water bowl I got is massive and covers quite a bit of the tank, I can't really put it in the middle or else my frog would have no room to find new places to burrow. And I'm not sure exactly how cold it is, all I know is that it is very cold. I don't put the heat lamp in the middle, if I did that might warm up some of the water but it would probably leave my frog a little cold. And again, when I say cold, I mean its REALLY cold water.
I'd ditch the large water dish, horned frogs are terrestrial and a water dish that the frog can just fit in is fine. Forget about humidity, they're not fussy about it and aslong as the substrate is moist. I don't even use a hygrometer for mine. If the tank soil does dry then pour some water in and stir it up. If you're using an exo terra you can cover some of the screen cos they're over ventilated.
I actually am using an exo terra, and I thought the same thing. Do you think it would be harmful to my frog if she goes into the cold water?
You could cover half of the top with foil which should help keep the humidity in, if your heat source is absolutely drying the tank out. I wouldn't worry about the water, aslong as it isn't arctic cold.
it may as well be arctic cold, which is why I'm so concerned about her using it
Go smaller water dish and put it in the middle so the heat lamp heats it up abit, the evaporating from the water might increase the humidity as well
