Thread: Flowering plants?

    Default Flowering plants?

Are there any flowering plants commonly used in vivariums? Besides orchids. I have a 65 gallon paludarium in progress for firebelly toads

There are plenty, actually. Most of the gesneriad family will flower in a viv. Sinningia, primulina, African violets, aesachanthus (sp?) will all flower in a viv, given the right conditions. Even the common hypostes will flower in a viv if given the right conditions. Some aquatics/ marginals will also throw their versions of a flower. Aroids like piptospatha and schismatoglottis will throw an inflorescence and cryptocoryne species will throw their flower (spathe) quite often when grown either semi-emersed or in a spot where the roots keep wet.

There are lots of choices, it's just a matter of personal preference.

Is there anything I should stay away from? Anything that could be poisonous to the frogs?

If they were to ingest them, about 90% of the plants we use in vivariums would be toxic to them. Even the most common plant used in vivs, pothos, is highly toxic. Good thing for us they aren't strict herbivores
