Hello. Any links to this question. Building a false floor for red eyes. Water, crate, screening. Any certain type of gravel then soil?. I built one years ago and use clay balls that helped clean the water and I used a filter. Can't think of what the balls were. Thanks
Hi there! I use a filter under my false bottom and once a fortnight I siphon it empty, clean the filter and top the water back up I use egg crate, screen, river pebbles, thick layer of peat, sphagnum on top!
If you are building a false bottom from egg crate, then no extra drainage layer is needed. Just screen off the egg crate, and you can place your substrate on top of the screen.
If using a material based drainage, you would have your drainage material, screening, then substrate.
Filtration is a whole separate issue because both methods have advantages and challenges.
