Default False bottom on new vivarium build?!

I am building a new vivarium for grey tree frogs and don't know whether to go false bottom or hydro balls. I want a small water feature(maybe just a 1-2in. Water area) and have a waterfall. Should I do false bottom? And how do you do it ? I bought egg crate the other day and also have hydro balls so either one I can do.

Hey, you can do either way. Personally, I find it is easier and more effective to go with an egg crate false bottom when incorporating a water feature. Both methods can be used, and there are benefits to both. We have a showroom in Floral Park, NY if you want to stop by and see examples and discuss further.

Like Viv in th emist said you can do it either way. To me the hardest part of doing the FB method is working on the transition from the land to the water. VitM is great at this as well as Derranged Chipmunk, pick their brains and listen to their advice!

You need to put the egg crate on stilts to place the egg crate above your max waterline. Once that is in place just lay the screen over the egg crate and start adding soil. I also cut my screen to be about 1" long on all sides that are touching glass and then I add soil to the edges first to secure it in place then I fill in the middle.

Ok thanks what kind of soil should I use? I have decided to do a 29 gallon tank like this and put dart frogs in it.

ABG mix is the standard soil for Dart frogs. I mix my own version of ABG that you can buy from my website (www.hashtagfrogs.com). We call ours "Dirt Bag". Other hobby sites have their own version of the mix they sell.

You will want to plan for at least 3" of soil for your tank. 4 bags ought to do it.
