I recently acquired my cousins fire bellied toad. He's around 3 years old and has only been fed crickets. He appears healthy and well. Would it be ok to incorporate meal worms into his diet or could it harm him since he's only eaten crickets all of his life? I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you!
Meal worms are fine as well as waxworms. Just limit the amount. Mealworms can cause impaction due to their tough exoskeleton and waxworms are pretty fatty. Use them as a weekly treat.
I wouldn't use mealworms at all but earthworms, roaches, and occasional waxworms are great for these toads
Thank you both!
i feed mine mealworms every now and then (usually on tank cleaning days) and havent had any issues.. i see no problems with every once in a while
Do you just get earthworms out the garden? is there any issues/risks with chemical exposure or bacteria etc. coming from outside.
Or do you feed eatrthworms bred specifically for live food use?
Getting live feed from the wild always has the risk of introducing toxic chemicals to your frogs like pesticides. Its generally recomended to put out the couple bucks and pick up feed from a local shop just to play it safe
Also, Id stay away from using the mealworms for treats. But if you are going to use them make sure their not too large. The bigger they are, the higher the risk of impaction
